You just clicked on this article because you don’t have the guts to do something.
What is that ‘something’ you don’t have the guts to do?
Is it fully pursuing that one idea you’ve been sitting on for a while?
Is it moving to a new state? Taking a job that’s not within your field of knowledge?
Is it telling someone you love them for the first time?
Whatever it is, you don’t have the guts to do it. Congratulations, you don’t need the guts to do it.
That’s because you already have the capacity, and frankly, there’s nothing more you need.
Your Guts Versus Your Capacity
Trusting your ‘guts’ or having the ‘guts’ to do something is a weird concept.
For some people, it’s a literal feeling in their stomach. For others, it’s more intuition than a physical feeling.
Your intuition to do or not to do something may be accurate, but it’s not what actually gets you to act. That’s where we have it all wrong.
The understanding of your personal capacity to do or not do something is what correlates to action.
Your gut feeling is just that…a feeling. Your capacity, however, leads to action.
What Is Your Capacity?
Your capacity to do something is whatever you believe it is, regardless of the truth.
Let’s say your capacity (if you could actually measure it) to own a small business is 80% with your current drive and knowledge.
But you believe your capacity is at 90% because you’re so confident that you can successfully own a small business despite a possible lack of resources and knowledge.
The mindset you have about your ability to do something raises your capacity to do it just as much as skill, talent, time, resources, or knowledge does.
The bottom line is your capacity to do something is whatever you want it to be.
If you don't think you have the guts to tell your girlfriend you love her, then believe you have the capacity to.
If you don’t have the guts to move to another state for your dream job, then believe you have the capacity to.
The reality is regardless of your ‘gut’ feeling about something or someone, your capacity will supersede it.
Take the reverse, for example. If you have the guts to take a new job at a higher position but you don't really think you have the capacity to be successful in that position, you probably won’t be.
It’s important to know that even if you feel like you don't have the guts to do something, you probably have the capacity to do it. And that’s all it really takes.
Real Talk
Your intuition is an important thing to listen to.
However, having a logical understanding of your capacity to do something is equally important.
You can naturally have the capacity to do something, or you can build it up from nothing.
Either way, your capacity is what facilitates action at the end of the day.
Scratch that; your perception of your capacity is what facilitates action.
So, start believing in your capacity to do big things. To make the world a better place. To change the lives of those around you. To live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
You may not have the guts, but you have the capacity. Go do it.
