Please don’t tell me you’ve forgotten good ol’ Isaac Newton’s First Law of Productivity?!
Sir Newton taught us that an object in motion stays in motion. And if this is true, then it must also mean that…
An object at rest stays at rest!
So, this begs the question: are you an object in motion or an object at rest?
One of the hardest things I’ve had to come to terms with during my mental health journey is that if I allow my sad and anxious self to remain at rest, then I will stay there for a long, long time.
At one point this year, my sadness and anxiety got so bad that it was overtaking my life, and I was sick of it! I was sick and tired of not being myself.
And you know what I had to do?
Instead of being an object at rest, I had to intentionally choose to be an object in motion. And ever since I got moving, I haven’t been able to stop.
About two months ago, I was at a pretty low point. And ever since I made the decision to be an object in motion, my life and mental health have significantly improved!
So take a moment to look around and assess your life. You may be an object in motion in the sense that you wake up every day and go to work, work out after you get home, and get a few chores done every night.
But are you an object in motion in the sense that you are progressing in your life and moving toward your dreams? Are you improving your life and lifestyle? Are you maintaining your positive habits and working to rid yourself of your negative ones?
Often, it’s easy to over-complicate the whole ‘getting into motion’ thing. It can feel impossibly hard to just start.
But, Isaac Newton’s Law reminds us that once we start, there’s literally no stopping us.
Once we get ourselves in motion, we will continue to be in motion.
Notice how Newton’s Law doesn’t say, “a super-fast object in motion is the only one that stays in motion.”
This should be comforting as it reminds us that we only need to take a small step forward in the right direction in order to get ourselves in motion. We don’t need to start off sprinting. We can start off with a slow walk (and even remain in a slow walk).
All that matters is that you make the effort to get yourself moving!
So make the decision right now to start moving. Because we know that once we start moving, we won’t be able to stop.
Today is your day, it’s the perfect day to get your life back on track. It’s the perfect day to start something new.
And all you have to do is start moving!
